Allegedly the ancient Greek goddess of the moon, the psychic vampire, Selene, was first seen tormenting the citizens of Nova Roma, particularly the New Mutant known as Magma, whom she followed to New York.

Upon arriving in New York, Selene encountered Rachel Summers whom would come to be known as Phoenix II. Having yet to establish a link with the Phoenix Force, Rachel was only an inexperienced telepath who had been used as a "hound" in the alternate future from which she came. This apparent weakness left her wide open for Selene to attempt to warp her mind and make rachel her apprentice, and a psychic vampire like herself. Rachel Escaped however with the aid of Professor Xavier and the X-Men.

Soon after, the Club’s Black Rook, and one of Selene’s psychic slaves, introduced Selene as a candidate for the Hellfire Club’s position of Black Queen. Having a temporarily enslaved Armanda(Magma) and Rachel in tow, and demonstrating the ability bolt to read minds and animate inanimate objects by crushing Shaw’s throne and encasing him in an indirect attack (Which he is all but helpless against) from the floor.

After a number of adventures against the X-Men, Selene was captured by Fitzroy in his quest to join the upstarts, and placed in a spooling chamber which repeatedly unraveled her flesh and put it back together with unbearable agony. Freed in the midst of the process by Excalibur’s Daytripper, Selene crawled off to slowly heal . . . and gain more power.

After killing and stealing the essence of a number of Externals(mutants with the potential to become immortal) Selene found and recruited the newly "resurrected" Madlyne Pryor from the side of Nate(X-man)Gray , training her to become the Black Rook in the new InnerCircle to be formed, and using her as bait to psychically ensnare Fritzroy.

Tessa went poking through her head, Madlyne gained favor with Shaw and usurped the position of Black Queen of the Hellfire Club.

Selene now plots her revenge on Madilyne Pryor, but has yet to make a move.
